Special Fishery Projects and Expert Witness
Innovative Net Systems is a tight little company, tucked away under some big oak trees in the Cajun Country of southern Louisiana.  We do not sell boots, baskets or baseballs.
There isn't an athletic sports net anywhere on the property and we don't want any.

What we do is design and I mean design extremely Top End gear for detailed, dangerous and delicate fishery  projects.

We designed the Zebra Mussel trawls that allowed researchers to criss over Lake Michigan without fear of loading up on the little critters.

We put Pallid and White sturgeon into trawl gear more often than ANY of our competitor's nets ever did.

Midwater sampling with small boats and not enough winch gear....no problem...we designed several pelagic nets that work from small vessels along with the leagal rights to manufacture and distribute true Icelandic small scale dihedral midwater doors.

We developed the Mamou Surface trawl for NOAA and other agencies to sample forage fishes and YOY salmon in areas that were inhospitalable to gill nets and seines.
The  Tri-Larval Trawl ( T-L²) for sampling Y.o.Y. and larval fishes down to 3mm in length.

Benthic sampling in swift water? Been there done that too. Our Misago beams both the deep sea version and the Mini-Misago have been taking fishes of all sizes and species for years.

We do DEEP and I mean DEEP! Our Misago beams have touched down 11,000 ft. in the Pacific Ocean.

YOY sampling in marshes and backwaters? We put  our  Beam'r,  Skag net , Siamese trawl with fish separator as well as the  famous H.A.T. ( Missouri trawl)  in almost all the states in union as well in Canada.

The Paupier Net system currently being  used  by the USFWS for Asian Carp monitoring as well as Spoon Bill catfish sampling is one of our creations.

We will soon be working on a Danish Seine and Pound net for Asian Carp.

Fish Cages for offshore work. Ever hear of the ASA OCAT fish cages ?  We built their prototypes years back as well as their Transfer Net.

Weird and strange? Hard areas to sample? Can't quite get those catalog companies to build you what  you REALLY want.....

The list goes on and on...

Bottom Line, call around  and check with our competitors first.....if they can not answer your questions to your liking...... call us!  We're small and we're slow....but we get it right!

EXPERT WITNESS

Innovative Net Systems can furnish an Expert Witness in netting design and  ( net design) patent infringement cases. Our company has  been used to issue  comments and/or reports on gear evaluation , fuel efficiency,  gear design  evaluation, habitat destruction from gear use, by-catch and destructive methods of fishing (specific types of trawling and seining).

Mini-Misago Detachable/Portable beam net system
The Portable Misago Beam. It strips down to  a small, compact size for shipping anywhere. It assembles with two wrenches and 4 minutes of your time!
Complete with Mud Raisins for muck , shell and cobble sediment, a Trash Zipper for removing those unwanted logs and detritus and if need be, a Rock Skirt to keep out the larger boulders. This is a tough little gear that works in 1 - 1500 Meters of water and from 75 to 500 hp.

SUPRESSOR TRAWL
The Supressor Trawl is a hot new item that seems to be working very well on those spooky species that you just can't seem to locate and hold. The Supressor trawl will not catch you more fish....it is designed to be hydro-accoustically quieter and catch those species that are harder to sample due to their wary nature.

Eel Pot design for YOY benthic fish and other...
This Eel Pot design works for a variety of fishes and crustaceans. It is simple, durable and can be strung out like a trot line....3,4,5, traps at a time.
It's not  just  for eels. The 4mm mesh keeps an abundance of YOY fishes.

Mamou Trawl
The Mamou Surface trawl is one of the hottest new gears we have brought to the table. This net works on the surface and down to 4-5 meters below the surface. It has proven an excellent forage fish and YOY pelagic fish catcher.
Some are saying it will be the next new gear for sampling those elusive juvenile paddle fish . Lightweight, floats, works with an outboard and no, you do NOT have to have winches to deal with this little tricked out net!

INS  offers a variety of otter doors, steel doors and custom made frames for  beam nets. We work with several machine shops locally to build our own style of hardware. No, this ain't your gandpaw's style either..... we make an assortment of turnkey frameworks for your small to large boat needs.

Heck, we make a beam net that works from a rubber Zodiac and 15 hp outboard to a 1200 lb. beam that samples 2 miles below the surface!

Yes we do rigging and bridles also.

American Soy Bean Association  Ocean Fish Cage Project

INS has worked on some very large and special projects.

One such project was the OCAT fish cages of the American Soy Bean Association.

Several years back, 2 fishery scientists  from a Gulf Coast university, walked into our little shop  early  one morning. It seems the two scientists had been hired , along with an engineering consultant, by the ASA to develope an off shore fish cage for raising Pompano.

They were now very far behind in delivering the  net portion of the cage to the ASA. Not only was that a pressing issue but  we immediately found a serious faux pas in the the net plan that was sent to our shop. No problem.... we  modified the design to fit the OCAT frame and proceeded  to finish up two complete OCAT nets for delivery.

The phone rang late  a day or so later . It seems they were  not finished with us yet. " The guys who designed this  don't seem to have an  easy way to  transfer the grown out fish from the cages ....except for maybe  dragging the whole  bag-o'-fish to shore.  Do you all have any ideas, " the project leader asked?

Faced with yet another deadline, we  looked over some of the other designs we had made in years past for various situations, tweaked a little here and  there and came up with the  Chas net. In Cajun speak ,a Chas is a "thing"....an entity with no name. The INS  net was made with HDPE netting and consisted of a tunnel shaped apparatus , with rings and a release zipper .
* when you view the link you will see a Chas in action , transferring fish*

Upon completion we also recommended that the ASA look into a new netting called K-Less poly ( which they immediatley did) as well the use of copper mesh to slow cold water algae growth. Both ideas apparently were assimilated into their present designs as seen in the updated link provided.

* No, you won't see us listed in the acknowledgements. We wondered about that too.*

So if you ever run into a similar situation....give us a call....no promises....but we might just turn your dilema into a Done Deal!

Garware Wall Ropes    asks Innovative Net Systems  for help

Not long ago, INS was approached by the President of Garware Wall Ropes USA of  Tacoma , Washington and asked if we could help their parent company Garware Wall Ropes of Pune India.

It seems the netting and twine giant was in need of net makers, rather someone to consult with their small group of  net makers for their burgeoning seine and trawl business.
INS was contracted to provide 3 years of such indepth consulting. Upon completion, the core group of qualified net makers had grown from the original 8  to over 500 or greater. * Not only did INS assist  with net making techniques, but in splicing/rigging, otter door construction, aquaculture nets,  sports netting, trawling techniques and even IT /CAD instructions  for making designs and  fabrication templates.

* we even had a little time along the way  to design and test a few of our own  Top Gunn trawls for the Hindu and Tamil fishermen along the coast.

Today both Garware Wall USA and Garware Wall Ropes of India are leaders in finished nets, netting twine and cordage. They got there  mostly on their own ....but they did have a little help from INS.

INS has the expertise and the years of in-the-field experience....... give us a call....you just never know. We just might help you too.......

INS Brings Icelandic Trawl Doors to Gulf Area

Long before anyone in the Gulf of Mexico had ever heard of a cambered trawl door, INS was working with Atli Josafatsson of Reykjavik Iceland, in conjunction with USL,  with  Atli's  Poly Ice "Viking Shield" trawl doors.

The Louisiana DNR sponsored the small scale project  and within several weeks we had preliminary testing  done and were submitting positive results . No hype, no huge budget....just a serious crew, no BS and  solid research  work.

Today, some of the bigger Gulf states universities have taken over this  project but we would like to remind them, Back-in-the -Day ....INS and its team of scientists, commercial  cooperators and USL had already been there, done that and bought the T-shirt!

The K-Less Poly / Nitto Seimo Connection

Of all the nettings we experimented with in new design, Nitto Seimo knotless netting , which we dubbed K-Less poly was the most versatile. INS made contact with the Tokyo based company in the late 1980's. After some R&D work with their product, INS began importing  the black knotless HDPE. It was a huge success for those looking for a high end, super fast fish net.

In the shrimp industry it over ran all competitors in speed, performance and durability. Trawlers using nets in the 12 Meter range of Head Rope could compete with larger boats using 18 and 20 Meter nets made of nylon.
Along the Gulf Coast alone,  our trawl nets, Paupiers and Skimmer nets made with the Nitto Seimo product out caught knotted nylon gears each and every day on the water.

The fuel savings were officially documented  by independant onboard engineers  in sea trials conducted in the Gulf of Mexico. Catch rates went up, door sizes went down also. The K-Less poly was an all around winner.

The famous Iruka and Misago beam nets took control of the Alaskan pink shrimp fishery with solid record catches year after year. The Nitto Seimo product worked beautifully in deep water and fast current conditions. Fishermen downsized from 50 to 35' beams and caught more shrimp with less effort. It seems that the K-Less poly produced less of a pressure wave that scared shrimp from its path.

In the aquaculture business, Nitto Seimo K-Less square mesh nets made a huge impact . The knotless material graded fish to specific sizes and withstood tremendous loads without breaking. It sifted mud rather than accumulating  it at the heavily leaded foot rope. The catfish producers liked that fact that fewer fish gilled in the knotless material. Durability was off the charts. It lasted and lasted for years.

Economics and cheap imports soon crowded the market.  The commercial fishing industry as a whole began a slow decline. Our own business shifted towards smaller, research and sampling gear, rather than larger commercial nets. The K-Less netting was  soon relegated to just a few who still wanted the Best of the Best. However, in our opinion, there will never be a faster, quieter more adapatable netting then Nitto Seimo K-Less poly and we hope that one day, conditions will be right for INS to help bring this all-around dependable material back into its business.

* INS  wishes to thank the Nitto Seimo corporation for its many years of solid  and professional  service to us . We express a deep fondness for their most honorable business practices towards our small company. We sincerely hope that one day we can work with them once again.
