The Mamou Trawl is a surface fishing gear that just found a home in the Midwest.
In the fight against the infestation of the Asian Carp, this gear can sample miles of channels, tributaries and back waters for signs of Asian Carp Y.o.Y.
It has already proven itself in both the Pacific and Atlantic for sampling herring, salmon smolt and other Y.o.Y. fishes. * Its even been used in the Pacific Gyre to sample new species taking up home inside the plastic debris*
The Mamou trawl deploys from an outboard or inboard vessel. 18' or 185', the Mamou can be deployed , run, and retrieved by hand if necessary. It is that easy of gear to use.
The Mamou samples from the surface down. That means it can float right over snags, rocks, delicate grass beds, sunken wrecks or just plain float out there in the deep ocean, taking samples from .75 to 5 meters down.
The Canadian Government found a use for these surface trawls in delicate back wood streams and rivers. Not wanting to disturb or uproot grass beds and mussels, they opted for the Micro-Mamou made with 4mm and 6mm mesh. These Mini-Micro-Mamous float right over the pristine areas and just tickle the top blades of the grass beds.....meanwhile sampling the little critters that emerge and swim out of the grass.
